The salon began around 1650 and was the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In December 1890, the director of the Société des Artistes Français, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, propagated the idea that the Salon should be an exhibition of young artists who had not yet received an award. Artists like Auguste Rodin rejected this proposal and split off. In the early 19th century, under the label "collection of young artists", basically punishable nude pictures were distributed. It’s a beautiful over 100 years old memento of the early trade of "pornography“.
