Suisses Rebelles (Swiss Rebels)

Karlheinz Weinberger

(French edition). Esther Woerdehoff (ed.). Steidl 2017. French. 240 pages, 165 illus. 22 x 30 cm // 8" x 11.5". 1.5 kg. Hardcover.

Karlheinz Weinberger's job in a Siemens warehouse may have been rather monotonous, but the photographs he took in his spare time are anything but conformist.

That's because his passion, and thus the focus of this book, belongs to the rebellious youth in Switzerland in the 1950s and '60s, who were inspired by American rock 'n' roll and developed their very own culture from it - with rolled-up jeans pants and denim jackets, puffy blow-dried hairstyles, striped T-shirts and homemade belt buckles featuring Elvis or James Dean. Weinberger's cheerful, free-spirited, and self-confident portraits show the youth's rebellious attitude as an antithesis to the conservative Swiss postwar era.

Swiss Rebels also presents a series of homoerotic images of rockers, bikers, construction workers, and athletes, many of whom were and are considered outside the social norm. This book is the first publication to provide a deeper insight into Karlheinz Weinberger's body of work.
